Advanced Women’s Residency Program

What:

This year we launched the Advanced Women’s Residency an innovative new program that develops new works by and about women in the second half of their lives. A 10 week pilot began in January 2019 lead by our Artistic Director Katherine Murphy Lewis. Over the course of the 10 weeks residents Marty Zermer-Honig and Katheryn Shamrell trained with guest artists, attended a series of local performances and were supported in the development of long form monologues that were shared with an invited audience at the end of the 10 weeks. We have now retuned to the studio for the month of October to expand on their original works. Since this program is is still in a incubation stage we are discovering as we go and creating a formate that serves the scope of each story our residents bring to the table. What has developed is a long form residency that gives the time and space needed to create more fully realized works.

**Note the program has been supported by Ronni Lacroute and Lagunitas. If you would like to support this work please contact our Program Director Katherine Murphy Lewis at katherineftgu@gmail.com OR to go to our donation page CLICK HERE.

MEET THE RESIDENTS:

Marty Zermer-Honig started her clown journey in 2006 when she took a clown intensive with Giovanni Fussetti. She failed miserably. But failure put her closer to the clown she has become today. Learning to fail and embracing that failure has become her clown journey. After Giovanni she worked closely with Elizabeth Baron a protege of Giovanni. Elizabeth helped her reach through the failure to become Swooney Rose and Ruby Rarebit. Both Swooney and Ruby have performed with The Flock since 2011.

Katheryn Shamrell is a native Oregonian and US Army veteran who studied Russian and Spanish at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA. She has a degree in Linguistics from the University of Oregon and worked with Russian and Spanish speaking refugees for nearly 20 years. She has come late to acting, but her long secret desire to become a Shakespearean actress could simply no longer be denied. She has studied with various teachers and participated in on-site Shakespeare training in Scotland where she performed the role of Hecate in Birnam Wood under the Old Oak Tree. She thinks Katherine Lewis and her staff are the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Why:

This program aims to give women in the second half of their life the training and support to develop autobiographical ‘solo’ shows. Given the cultural invisibility of women in the later part of their lives we so rarely get to hear and engage in stories that center around this population. This residency was developed to address this need. It is our aim to support the development and production of these rich and important stories that so rarely make it to the surface.
